Honden en katten kunnen besmet worden met wormen. Dit kan bijvoorbeeld gebeuren in de baarmoeder (bij pups), via de moedermelk (bij pups en kittens), door het contact met de uitwerpselen van andere dieren of door het eten van besmette insecten.
Het vervelende van een wormenbesmetting is dat je dit bij volwassen dieren nauwelijks zal zien, ook omdat wormen maar af en toe via de ontlasting zichtbaar zijn. Alleen bij jonge dieren zullen de tekenen makkelijker zichtbaar zijn. Zo zal een jong dier soms vermageren, braken en / of diarree als gevolg van een wormenbesmetting.
Wanneer uw huisdier besmet is met een lintworm zal u dat wat vaker waar kunnen nemen, omdat de lintworm zich onafhankelijk van de ontlasting buiten de anus kan bewegen. Daar zijn ze dan als rijstkorrels zichtbaar.
Uit onderzoek blijkt dat gemiddeld 5 tot 10 procent van de honden en katten in Nederland spoelwormen bij zich draagt en eitjes in de ontlasting uitscheiden. In kennels zie je ook wel eens zweepwormen, terwijl een lintworm vaak optreedt in combinatie met een vlooienbesmetting.
Ontwormingsadvies
Vanwege het risico voor de gezondheid van o.a. mensen wordt er door dierenartsen geadviseerd om uw hond en kat gemiddeld vier keer per jaar te ontwormen. Het ontwormen hond en ontwormen kat is een preventieve maatregel. Pups, kittens en jachthonden dien vaker te worden ontwormt. Daar in tegen hoeft de binnen katten minder vaak ontwormt te worden.

Ontwormingsmiddel is er in verschillende soorten en vormen. Zo kunt u verschillende tabletten krijgen, maar ook pastas die u gemakkelijk kunt doseren of via druppels in de nek. Voor Pups wordt vaak drontal pup gekocht van Bayer.
Voor veel huisdier eigenaren is het lastig om een dier een middel toe te dienen. Geadviseerd wordt dan om de tabletten te verstoppen in een stukje kaas of een stukje worst. Mocht dit niet lukken dan kunt u het beste kiezen voor druppels die u gemakkelijk in de nek kunt aanbrengen.
