BABY BLUE »« Bob Dylan

[G] John Wesley Harding was a [Am] friend to the [G] poor
He [G] travelled with a gun in every [Am] hand [C]
[G] All across this countryside he [Am] opened many a [G] door
But he was [G] never known to [Am] hurt an honest [G] man

G Am G It was down in Chaynee County, a time they talk about
G Am C With his woman by his side he took a stand
G Am G And soon the situation there was all but straightened out
G Am G For he was always known to lend a helping hand

G Am G All across the telegraph his name it did resound
G Am C But no charge held against him could they prove
G Am G And there was no man around who could track or trail him down
G Am G For he was never known to make a foolish move

Aint it [G] just like the night to play
[C] Tricks when you're [D] trying to be so [G] quiet G/C G
We [G] sit here stranded, all d[C]oing our [D] best to [G] deny it G/C G
And [D] Louise holds a handful of rain tempting you to [G] defy it
Lights [C] flicker from the opposite [G] loft
In [C] this room the heatpipes just [G] coughed
The [C] country music station plays soft,
But there's nothing, really nothing to turn [D] off
Just [G] Louise, and her [C] lover so[D] entwin[G]-ed G/C G
And these [C] visions of [G] Johanna, that [D] conquer my [G] mind

In the empty lot where the ladies play Blind Mans Bluff with the keychain
& the Allnite girls they whisper of escapades out on the D-Train
Where you can hear the nightwatchman click his flashlight
Ask himself if it's him or them that's insane
Louise, she's alright she's just near
She's delicate, and seems like the mirror
But she just makes it all too concise and too clear
That Johanna's not here
The ghost of electricity howls in the bones of her face
And these Visions of Johanna have taken my place

Now Little Boy Lost, he takes himself so seriously
He brags of his misery, he likes to live dangerously
And when bringing her name up, he speaks of a farewell kiss to me
He's sure got a lotta gall, to be so useless and all
Muttering small talk at the wall, while I'm in the hall
How can I explain, it's so hard to get on
And these Visions of Johanna, they kept me up past the dawn

Inside the museums, infinity goes up on trial
Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while
But Mona Lisa must've had the highway blues
You can tell by the way she smiles
See the primitive wallflower frieze
When the jelly-faced women all sneeze
Hear the one with the moustache say
Jeez, I can't find my knees!
Oh jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule
And these Visions of Johanna, they make it all seem so cruel

The pedlar now speaks to the countess who's pretending to care for him
Saying 'name me someone who's not a parasite,
and I'll go out and say a prayer for him'
But like Louise always says 'you can't look at much, can you man'
as she herself prepares for him
And Madonna she still has not showed
We see this empty cage now corrode
Where her cape of the stage once had flowed
The fiddler now steps into the road
He writes 'everythings been returned which was owed'
On the back of the fishtruck that loads
While my conscience explodes
The harmonicas play the skeleton keys in the rain
And these Visions of Johanna are now all that remain

When you're [G] lost in the rain in Juarez, [C] and it's Easter time [G] too
And you're [G] gravity fails and nega [C]-tivity don't pull you [G] thru
Dont p[C]ut on any airs when you're down on Rue Morgue Aven[G]ue
They got some [D] hungry women there, they [C] really make a mess outa [G] you

G C G Now if you see St. Annie, please tell her 'thanks a lot'
G C G I cannot move, my fingers are all in a knot
C G     I don't have the strength to get up and take another shot
D C G And my best friend my doctor won't even say what it is I got

G C G Sweet Melinda, the peasants call her the goddess of gloom
G C G She speaks good English and she invites you up into her room
C G     And you're so kind and careful not to go to her too soon
D C G And she takes your voice, and leaves you howling at the moon

G C G Up on Housing Project Hill, it's either fortune or fame
G C G You must pick one or the other tho' neither of them are to be what they claim
C G     If you're looking to get silly, you better go back to from where you came
D C G Because the cops don't need you, and man they expect the same

G C G Now all the authorities, they just stand around and boast
G C G How they blackmailed the Sergeant-at-Arms into leaving his post
C G     And picking up Angel, who just arrived here from the coast
D C G Who looked so fine at first, but left looking just like a ghost

G C G I started out on Burgundy, but soon hit the harder stuff
G C G Everybody said they'd stand behind me when the game got rough
C G     But the joke was on me, there was nobody even there to bluff
D C G I'm goin' back to New York City, I do believe I've had enough

[D] They sat together in the park, [Dmaj7] while the evening sky grew dark
[D7] She looked at him & he felt a spark [G] tingle through his bones
It was [Gm] then he felt alone, and [D] wished that [F#m] he'd gone [G] straight
And [D] watched out for a [A7] Simple Twist of [D] Fate

D Dmaj7        They walked along by the old canal, a little confused, I remember well
D7 G             Stopped into a strange hotel with a neon burning bright
Gm D F#m G He felt the heat of the night hit him like a freight train
D A7 D          Moving with a Simple Twist of Fate

D Dmaj7        A saxaphone someplace faroff played as she was walking by the arcade
D7 G             As the light bust thru a beat-up shade where he was waking up
Gm D F#m G She dropped a coin into the cup of a blind man at the gate
D A7 D          And forgot about a Simple Twist of Fate

D Dmaj7        He woke up, the room was bare, he didn't see her anywhere
D7 G             He told himself he didn't care, pushed the window open wide
Gm D F#m G Felt that emptiness inside, to which he just could not relate
D A7 D          Brought on by a Simple Twist of Fate

D Dmaj7        He hears the ticking of the clock, walks along with a parrot that talks
D7 G             Hunts her down by the waterfront docks where the sailors all come in
Gm D F#m G Maybe she'll pick him out again, how long must he wait
D A7 D          One more time for a Simple Twist of Fate

D Dmaj7        People tell me it's a sin to know and feel too much within
D7 G             I still believe she was my twin, but I lost the ring
Gm D F#m G She was born in spring, but I was born too late
D A7 D          Blame it on Simple Twist of Fate

Well early in the [G] morning, till late at night
I got a poison [C] headache, but I feel all [G] right
I'm pledging my time, to [D7] you, hoping you'll come thru, [G] too

G      Well the hobo got me high, he came to me naturally
C G   He stole my baby, then he wanted to steal me
D7 G I'm pledging my time, to you, hoping you'll come thru, too

G      Won't you come with me, babe, I'll take you where you wanna go
C G   And if it don't work out, you'll be the first to know
D7 G I'm pledging my time, to you, hoping you'll come thru, too

G      Well the room is so stuffy, I can hardly breath
C G   Everybody's gone but me & you, I can't be the last to leave
D7 G I'm pledging my time, to you, hoping you'll come thru, too

G      Well they sent for the ambulance, and one was sent
C G   Somebody got lucky, but it was an accident
D7 G I'm pledging my time, to you, hoping you'll come thru, too

[A] Meet me in the morning, [D] 56th and Watershaw
[D] Meet me in the morning, [D7] 56th and Waters[A]-haw
Honey [E7] we could be in Kansas,
[D7] by the time the snow begins to [A] thaw

A D      They say the darkest hour is right before the dawn
D D7 A They say the darkest hour is right before the dawn
E7        Honey you wouldn't know it by me
D7 A     But everything's been darkness since you've been gone

A D      Blue rooster crowing, must be someting on his mind
D D7 A Blue rooster crowing, must be someting on his mind
E7        Well I feel just like that rooster
D7 A     Honey you treat me so unkind

A D      Well I struggled thru barbed-wire, felt the hail fall from above
D D7 A Well I struggled thru barbed-wire, felt the hail fall from above
E7        Well you know I've even out-run the Hound Dog
D7 A     Honey you know I've earned your love

A D      Look at the sun, sinking like a ship
D D7 A Look at the sun, sinking like a ship
E7        Ain't that just like my heart, babe
D7 A     When you kiss my lip

[G] Mama take this [D] badge of of [Am] me,
[G] I can't [D] use it any[C]-more
[G] It's getting [D] dark, too dark to [Am] see
[G] I feel I'm [D] knocking on heaven's [C] door

[G] Knock, knock, [D] knocking on heavens [Am] door
[G] Knock, knock, [D] knocking on heavens [C] door
[G] Knock, knock, [D] knocking on heavens [Am] door
[G] Knock, knock, [D] knocking on heavens [C] door

G D Am Mama put my guns in the ground
G D C    I can't shoot them anymore
G D Am That long black cloud is coming down
G D C    I feel I'm knocking on heaven's door

[G] Knock, knock, [D] knocking on heavens [Am] door
[G] Knock, knock, [D] knocking on heavens [C] door
[G] Knock, knock, [D] knocking on heavens [Am] door
[G] Knock, knock, [D] knocking on heavens [C] door

G D Am Mama wipe the blood from my face
G D C    I'm sick and tired of the war
G D Am Got a feeling that's hard to trace
G D C    I feel I'm knocking on heaven's door

[G] Knock, knock, [D] knocking on heavens [Am] door
[G] Knock, knock, [D] knocking on heavens [C] door
[G] Knock, knock, [D] knocking on heavens [Am] door
[G] Knock, knock, [D] knocking on heavens [C] door

[C] Nobody [F] feels [G] any [C] pain
Tonight as I [F] stand [G] inside the [C] rain
[F] Everybody [G] knows
[F] That Baby's got new [G] clothes
But [F] late[Em]-ly [Dm] I [C] see her [G] ribbons and her bows
Have [Am] fallen [C] from [F] her [G] curls

She [C] takes [Em] just [Dm] like [C] a [F] woman yes she does
She [C] makes love [Em] just [Dm] like [C] a [F] woman yes she does
And she [C] aches [Em] just [Dm] like [C] a [F] woman
But she [G] breaks just like a little [C] girl.

F C F G C

Queen Mary, she's my friend.
Yes I believe I'll go see her again.
Noboby has to guess
That baby can't be blessed,
'Till she sees finally that she's like all the rest.
With her fog, her amphetamines, and her pearls

It was [E7] raining from the first
And I was dying of thirst
So I [C] came in here
And your [E7] long time curse hurts
But whats worse is this [F] pain in here

[G] I can't stay in here, ain't it clear that..

I just can't fit.
Yes I believe it's time for us to quit.
And when we meet again,
Introduced as friends,
Please don't let on that you knew me when,
I was hungry, and it was your world.

They [G] guilty undertaker sighs, the [Bm] lonesome organ-grinder cries
The [Em] silver saxaphones say I should [D7] refuse you
The [C] cracked bells and washed out horns
[G] Blow into my face with scorn
But it's [Em] not that way, I wasnt born to [D7] lose you

Chorus
I [G] Want You, I [Bm] want you, I [Em] want you so [D7] bad
Honey I [G] want you

The drunken politician leaps upon the street where the mothers weep
And the saviours who are fast asleep they wait for you
And I wait for them to interrupt me drinking from my broken cup
And asking me to open up the gate for you

Now [Bm/Em] all my fathers they've gone down, true [C] love they've been [C] without it
But [Bm/Em] all their daughters put me down cos [C] I don't think [D7] about it

Well I return to the Queen of Spades & talk with my chambermaid
She knows that I'm not afraid to look at her
She is good to me and there's nothing she doesn't see
She knows where I'd like to be but It doesn't matter

Now [Bm/Em] all my fathers they've gone down, true [C] love they've been [C] without it
But [Bm/Em] all their daughters put me down cos [C] I don't think [D7] about it

Now your dancing child with his Chinese suit
He spoke to me, I took his flute
I know I wasn't very cute to him, was I?
But I did it because he lied
And because he took you for a ride
And because time was on his side, and because I ...

Now [Bm/Em] all my fathers they've gone down, true [C] love they've been [C] without it
But [Bm/Em] all their daughters put me down cos [C] I don't think [D7] about it

Your [Am] breath is sweet your eyes are like two [G] jewels in the sky
Your [F] back is straight your hair is smooth on the [E] pillow where you lie
[Am] But I don't sense affection, no, nor [G] gratitude nor love
Your [F] loyalty is not to me, but [E] to the stars above

[F] One more cup of coffee for the [E] road
[F] One more cup of coffee 'fore I [E] go, to the valley [Am] below

Am G Your Daddy he's an outlaw and a wanderer by trade
F E    He'll teach you how to pick and choose, and how to throw the blade
Am G He oversees his kingdom so no stranger will intrude
F E    His voice it trembles as he calls for another plate of food

[F] One more cup of coffee for the [E] road
[F] One more cup of coffee 'fore I [E] go, to the valley [Am] below

Am G Your sister sees the future like your mother and yourself
F E    You've never learned to read or write, there's no books upon your shelf
Am G But your pleasure knows no limits, your voice is like a meadowlark
F E    But your heart is like an ocean, mysterious and dark

[F] One more cup of coffee for the [E] road
[F] One more cup of coffee 'fore I [E] go, to the valley [Am] below

I [G] pity the poor [C] immigrant who [D7] wishes he would have stayed [G] home
Who uses [G] all his power to do [C] evil but in the [D7] end is always left so [G] alone
That [Em] man whom with his [Bm] fingers cheats, who [C] lies with every [G] breath
Who [G] passionately [C] hates his life and [D7] likewise fears his [G] death

G C D7 G     I pity the poor immigrant who tramples thru the mud
G C D7 G    Who fills his mouth with laughing & who builds his town with blood
Em Bm C G Who eats but is not satisfied, who hears but does not see
G C D7 G    Who falls in love with wealth itself and turns his back on me

G C D7 G     I pity the poor immigrant whose strength is spent in vain
G C D7 G    Whose heaven is like ironsides, whose tears are like rain
Em Bm C G Whose visions in the final end, must shatter like the glass
G C D7 G    I pity the poor immigrant when his gladness comes to pass

[Bm] Our conversation was [Am] short and sweet
[Bm] It nearly knocked me, [Am] off my feet
And I'm [G] back in the rain, [C] oh, and you are on dry [G] land
[C] You made it there some[Am] how, you'[Bm] re a [C] big girl [G] now

Bm Am      Bird on the horizon, sitting on a fence
Bm Am      He's singing a song for me, at his own expense
G C G       And I'm just like that bird, oh, singing just for you
C Bm C G I hope that you can hear, hear me singing thru these tears

Bm Am      Time is a jet plane, it moves too fast
Bm Am      Oh but what a shame, if all we've shared can't last
G C G       I can change, I swear, Oh, see what you can do
I can make it thru, You can make it too.

Bm Am      Love is so simple, to coin a phrase
Bm Am      You've known it all the time, I'm learnin' it these days
G C G       Oh, I know where I can find you, Oh, in somebody's room
C Bm C G That's a price I have to pay, You're a big girl all the way

Bm Am      A change in the weather, is known to be extreme
Bm Am      But what's the sense in changing horses in mid-stream
G C G       I'm going out of my mind, oh, with a pain that stops and starts
C Bm C G Like a corkscrew down my heart, ever since we've been apart.

If not for [D] you
[G] Babe, I couldn't [D] find the door
[G] Couldn't [D]even see the floor
[G] I'd be sad and [F#m] blue
Babe, [Em] if not for [D] you

[G] If not for [D] you
[G] Babe I'd lie [D] awake at night
[G] waitin for the [D] morning light
[G] to shine in [F#m] through
[Em] But it would not be [F#m] new [Em] If not for [D] you.

[G] If not for you my [D] sky would fall
[A] Rain would gather [D] too
[G] without your love I'd be [D] nowhere at all
[E] Oh what would I [A] do if not for [G] you

F#m Em A G F#m Em D G D

[G] If not for [D] you
[G] Winter would [D] have no spring
[G] Couldnt hear the [D] robin sing
[G] I just wouldnt have [F#m] a clue
[Em] Anyway it wouldnt ring[F#m]  true [Em] If not for [D] you

If not for you
If not for you
...

[D]may God bless and keep you always
may your [F#m] wishes all come true
may you [G] always do for others
and let others do for [D] you
[D] may you build a ladder to the stars
and [F#m] climb on every rung
and may you [G]stay [A7]forever [D] young

D         may you grow up to be righteous
F#m     may you grow up to be true
G         may you always know the truth
D         and see the light surrounding you
D         may you always be courageous
F#m     stand upright and be strong
G A7 D and may you stay forever young

forever [A7] young forever [Bm] young
may you [D] stay [A7] forever [G] young [D]

D         may your hands always be busy
F#m     may your feet always be swift
G         may you have a strong foundation
D         when the winds of changes shift
D         may your heart always be joyful
F#m     may your song always be sung
G A7 D and may you stay forever young

[E]Buckets of rain, buckets of tears,
Got all them buckets comin' out of my ears
[A] Buckets of moonbeams in my [E] hand
[B7] You got all the love, [A] honey baby I can [E] stand

E, A, E, B-A-G#m-F#m-E

E          I've been meek & hard like an oak
Seen pretty people disappear like smoke
Am       Friends will arrive, friends will disappear
B7 A E If you want me, honey baby, I'll be here

E          I like your smile and your fingertips
I like the way that you move your hips
Am       I like the way you love me strong and slow
B7 A E I'm takin' you with me, honey baby when I go

E          Little red wagon, little red bike
I ain't no monkey but I know what I like
Am       I like the cool way you look at me
B7 A E Everything about you is bringing me misery

E          Life is sad, life is a bust
All you can do, is do what you must
Am       Ya do what ya must do, and ya do it well
B7 A E I'll do it for you, honey baby can't you tell

[Em]As I went out one [D]morning, to breath the [Em]air around [D]Tom [Em]Payne
I [Em]spied the fairest [D]damsel, that [Em]ever did walk [D]in [Em]chains
I [G]offered her my [Bm]hand, she [Em]took me by [D]the [Em]arm
I [Em]knew that very [D]instant, that she [Em]meant to do [D]me [Em]harm

Em D Em D Em  Depart from me this moment, I told her with my voice
Em D Em D Em  Said she, but I don't wish to, said I, but you have no choice
G Bm Em D Em  I beg you sir, she pleaded, from the corners of her mouth
Em D Em D Em  I will secretly accept you, and together we'll fly south

Em D Em D Em  Just then old Tom Payne himself came running from across a field
Em D Em D Em  Shouting at this lovely girl, and commanding her to yield
G Bm Em D Em  And as she was letting go her grip, up Tom Payne did run
Em D Em D Em  I'm sorry sir, he said to me, I'm sorry for what she's done
