The mind which has become accustomed to the freedom and impartiality of philosophic contemplation will preserve something of the same freedom and impartiality in the world of action and emotion. It will view its purposes and desires as parts of the whole, with the absence of insistence that results from seeing them as infinitesimal fragments in a world of which all the rest is unaffected by any one man's deeds. The impartiality which, in contemplation, is the unalloyed desire for truth, is the very same quality of mind which, in action, is justice, and in emotion is that universal love which can be given to all, and not only to those who are judged useful or admirable. Thus contemplation enlarges not only the objects of our thoughts, but also the objects of our actions and our affections: it makes us citizens of the universe, not only of one walled city at war with all the rest. In this citizen-ship of the universe consists man's true freedom, and his liberation from the thraldom of narrow hopes and fears. 

Thus, to sum up our discussion of the value of philosophy; Philosophy is to be studied, not for the sake of any definite answers to its questions, since no definite answers can, as a rule, be known to be true, but rather for the sake of the questions themselves; because these questions enlarge our conception of what is possible, enrich our intellectual imagination and diminish the dogmatic assurance which closes the mind against speculation; but above all because, through the greatness of the universe which philosophy contemplates, the mind also is rendered great, and becomes capable of that union with the universe which constitutes its highest good.

Een geest die zich de vrijheid en onpartijdigheid van het wijsgerig denken heeft aangewend zal op het gebied van handelingen en gevoelens min of meer een zelfde vrijheid en onpartijdigheid aanhouden. Doelstellingen en begeerten zullen gezien worden als deel van het grote geheel; afstandelijk, want in het besef dat ze slechts een miniem onderdeel zijn van een wereld waarin de daad van één enkel mens nauwelijks iets uitmaakt. Onpartijdigheid, in het denken vertegenwoordigd door een zuiver verlangen naar waarheid, is een geestesgesteldheid die bij het handelen als rechtvaardigheid naar voren komt, en zich in het gevoelsleven uit als de universele liefde die allen toekomt en niet alleen hen die zich als verdienstelijk of bewonderenswaardig onderscheiden hebben. Zo verruimt wijsgerige bespiegeling niet alleen het object van ons denken, maar ook dat van ons handelen en voelen; ze maakt ons tot bewoners van het universum, en niet alleen van een ommuurde stad die met heel de buitenwereld in oorlog is. Want als universeel burger kan de mens waarlijk vrij zijn, en ontkomen aan de slavernij van zijn kleingeestige angsten en verwachtingen. 

Wanneer we nu de voorafgaande discussie over het belang van de filosofie kort samenvatten, dient de wijsbegeerte dus niet bestudeerd te worden om op bepaalde vragen een sluitend antwoord te vinden, omdat dergelijke definitieve oplossingen doorgaans niet op waarheid getoetst kunnen worden. Waar het in de filosofie om gaat zijn veeleer de vragen zelf, die ons zicht op wat mogelijk is verbreden, onze intellectuele verbeelding verrijken, en de dogmatische zekerheid die onze geest voor bespiegeling ontoegankelijk maakt relativeren. Maar bovenal zal door wijsgerige beschouwing de grootsheid van het universum zich ook aan ons eigen denken meedelen, zodat ons hoogste doel, een optimale vereniging van geest en universum, binnen ons bereik komt te liggen.
